Places to Sell Pigs in Kenya

Do you rear pigs and wonder where to sell them?

If so, you’re in the right place because I am going to explore the best places to sell your pigs.

In Kenya, there are several options for selling pigs.

Here are some places where you can sell your pigs:

1. Farmers Choice

Farmers Choice mainly deals with the processing of fresh pork and pork products like sausage, pork and ham.

They source 70% of their pork from farmers.

You can apply anytime to sell your pig to the company.

But you have to meet the following requirements:

  • You should rear pigs that are healthy (safe for human consumption). That means they should be free of disease, and come from disease-free regions.
  • The pigs should be seven to eight months old and weigh between 80 and 100 kgs.
  • You should keep in mind the 28-day withdrawal period starting on the last treatment day.
  • All the male pigs must be castrated
  • You should deliver your pigs before 6 pm on stipulated days only

The company makes payments based on cold-dressed weights or dead weights

The company doesn’t accept entire boars.

2. Oscar’s Food Ltd

Oscar’s Food Ltd is a Farmer’s Choice alternative.

They supply all meat products from beef, pork and pork products (like sausage, bacon, and ham) and chicken.

They also buy their pork directly from farmers, so you can contact them to sell your pigs.

3. Slaughter Houses

There are many slaughterhouses across the country that buy pigs from farmers, such as:

  • Ndumbu-ini Farm Pig Slaughter House: It has many branches in Nairobi and Nakuru. The biggest branches in Nairobi are located in Kabete and Parklands/Westlands.

4. Live Pig Markets

Live pig markets are not common in urban areas because they have come under increased scrutiny due to concerns about animal welfare and the risk of disease transmission.

They are mostly found in rural areas or areas located outskirts of the city where you can sell your live pigs to individual buyers or middlemen.

5. Pig Traders and Brokers

Pig traders and brokers can help farmers find buyers for their pigs.

They often operate as intermediaries between farmers and buyers and can help negotiate prices and arrange transportation.

However, many farmers have complained that brokers set very low prices for a kg of pork.

Some go as low as 250 per kg.

6. Online Marketplaces

There are several online marketplaces in Kenya that connect farmers with potential buyers.

Examples include Jiji and Mkulima Young.

Also, some Facebook groups like PIG BUYERS AND SELLERS GROUP KENYA and  KENYA PIG FARMERS ASSOCIATION GROUPconnect pig buyers and sellers.

7. Pig Auctions

Pig auctions are another option for selling pigs in Kenya.

These events are usually organized by agricultural associations or cooperatives, and allow farmers to sell their pigs to multiple buyers in a competitive bidding process.

8. Butcheries

If you’ve walked through estates lately, you’ve noticed that there is an influx of pork butcheries.

This is because the demand for pork is high.

Because the demand for pork is high but the supply is low, many butcheries are now buying pigs or pork directly from farmers.

So, if you have pigs to sell, visit your local pig butcheries and tell them that you sell pigs.

You’ll be surprised at how fast you’ll sell your pigs.

How Much Can You Sell A Pig In Kenya?

The price of a pig in Kenya can vary depending on several factors, such as the age and weight of the pig, the breed, and the location of the market.

Additionally, prices can fluctuate due to supply and demand in the market.

The average price of a live pig in Kenya ranges from KES 8,000 to KES 30,000 or Ksh 591.61 per kg.

However, prices could be higher or lower than this range depending on the factors mentioned above.

It’s important to note that the price of a live pig is just one part of the total cost of pig farming, which also includes the cost of feed, housing, and veterinary care.

Pig farmers in Kenya typically sell their pigs at live animal markets or to individual buyers, and they may negotiate prices based on the current market conditions and the quality of the pigs being sold.

Which Breeds Of Pigs Are Most Profitable In Kenya?

More than 100 breeds of pig exist in the world.

But in Kenya, farmers focus on the most profitable ones, such as Large White, Yorkshires, Landrace, Hampshire and Duroc.
