What Are Marine Spirits? (Here’s Everything You Need To Know)

If you have been a Christian for a while, you know that there exists a spirit world beyond what we see.

Spirits (both good and evil) have an impact in human life more than we care to know.

God himself, the creator of the universe, exists on the earth in form of a spirit: The Holy Spirit.

Likewise, his greatest enemy, Satan, also roams the earth as a spirit.

The Bible says that both the earth and the sea have demonic spirits. Those that live in the sea are called water spirits or marine spirits.

Let’s explore the lattter in detail.

What Are Marine Spirits And Do They Exist?

The simplest definition of marine or water spirits is that they are demonic forces from marine agents.

Ideally, the spirit world, according to charismatic Christians, consists of several types of spirits.

Some of them include Leviathan, Jezebel, Mermaid, and marine spirits.

As the name suggests, marine spirits are believed to reside in water bodies such as oceans, rivers, lakes, and dams.

The spirits are believed to be responsible for causing people to commit sexual sin.

They are also referred to as spirit wives (succubus) and spirit husbands (incubus) as they lead to all types of sexually immoral behavior.

It is believed that when a marine spirit possesses a person, they consciously and unconsciously commit adultery, fornication, sexual lust, pornography, polygamy, masturbation, sex dreams, and just perversion.

The spirit does more as it wars against marriages, families, countries, and continents. It possesses both men and women and seeks to destroy relationships.

Those that believe in marine spirits use scriptures of the Bible to make their arguments.

One of notable verse is Luke 8:26-33 where Jesus exorcised demons from a man sending them to the nearby pigs.

These, in turn, rushed to the sea and tossed themselves in the water. The demons wanted to go back to the water where they belonged as they were marine spirits.

Isaiah 27:1 also talks about the Lord (in that great day) punishing Leviathan, the flying serpent who resides in the sea. Leviathan has always been categorized as a marine spirit.

The verse speaks of the day after the resurrection when Christ goes to the headquarters of hell to take the keys off the devil and hand them over to his followers.

One of the demons he slays is Leviathan who is a marine spirit. That goes to show the existence of these water deities.

But beliefs and myths are different from facts. The fact that some Christian sects believe in marine spirits doesn’t make them real.

Those that don’t care for religion are adamant that marine spirits are simply unreal.

This means that marine spirits are more like a belief concept rather than a reality.

The Bible doesn’t focus on it at all. As a matter of fact, the word ‘marine spirit” doesn’t appear in the entire book.

Scholars and Bible teachers are the ones that have drawn conclusions on the whole thing.

Common Beliefs Or Myths Associated With Marine Spirits

Certain people living near large water bodies have deep-rooted beliefs in the existence of marine spirits.

Since they are close to the oceans, lakes, and rivers, they believe that waters carry spirits that control the lives of human beings.

 The beliefs are varied.

Some claim that the spirits that live in the water cause drowning incidences. And Sacrificing to them keeps them away.

Others are believed to cause all kinds of accidents for coastal residents.

An example is Winnie Chitsaka who resides in Mombasa, Kenya.

While growing up, her folks brought her attention to the existence of water spirits or “Jinis” as they are referred to locally.

The spirits are believed to fall in love with victims by drowning them. They also suck people’s blood when they go out to sea.

Kids would be told to cut themselves open and let some blood flow to the sea if they feel they are drowning without control. The spirits would drink the blood and let go of the person.

In a past study done on the influence of mythical beings on the activities of fisheries in Brazil, researchers interviewed a group of fishers, and all of them confirmed that they respected and feared mythical water beings.

They also stated that they offer the spirits sacrifices for protection and success during fishing.

How Does One Become A Victim Of Marine Spirits?

Marine spirits are believed to oppress, possess, and afflict people.

They are said to have elaborate networks that infiltrate the lives of victims using sex and other avenues.

Through marine powers, they are said to fire arrows and introduce all kinds of problems such as poverty, sickness, and insanity.

It is believed that the spirits introduced these problames through the following avenues:

  • Consultation of marine agents such as false ministers, priests, pastors, and prophets.
  • Evil initiation into marine societies and powers
  • Visit to white garment churches
  • Having evil associations with individuals that have been introduced to the societies
  • Being a part of a family or territory that worships or gives sacrifices to marine powers
  • Evil covenants
  • River initiation
  • Bathing with polluted waters at birth
  • Having your placenta buried in the water
  • Laying of hands by false priests or pastors

Rituals & Practices That are  Believed To Protect People From The Influence Of Marine Spirits

There are two ways that believers of marine spirits use to protect themselves from the evil forces.

A. Prayers

There are special prayers made to God that are believed to break evil altars in the victim’s family and release the hold of the spirits in his/her life.

It is recommended that one engages in spiritual warfare and use verses that talk about victory and freedom from any evil forces in his/her life.

Isaiah 54:17, Jeremiah 17:18, and Isaiah 27:1 are great places to begin.

Additionally, one needs to submit themselves to the obedience of God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you as scripture alludes to.

B. Conducting Rituals

Specific coastal tribes carry out cleansing rituals before going to the sea to ward off marine spirits.

Elders go to shrines and contact points to carry out the sacrifices.

Often, these include the slaughter of animals such as cows and goats to appease the spirits.

The sacrificed animals aren’t consumed by human beings but are dropped in deep waters hoping the spirits will consume them.

Can Marine Spirits Possess Or Influence Individuals?

Marine spirits are believed to possess humans. They do that consciously and unconsciously.

Those that are possessed consciously are believed to be aware they are being possessed by evil spirits.

Their counterparts are said to remain clueless about the operation of the spirit in their lives.

It is thought that you can tell you are possessed if you become sexually immoral without feeling guilty about it. This includes having a sexual urge that is extremely difficult to control.

Despite having a spouse, the possessed individual may desire a string of sexual partners. Even after sleeping with them, they may not feel satisfied and would want more.

Marine spirits are also believed to affect more women than men. They get them to lure men with their provocative dressing styles and mannerisms.

In particular, the spirits are thought to cause the women to go after married men in a bid to break families apart.

But they are believed to possess men too who commit adultery, embrace homosexuality, and engage in watching pornography.

Other symptoms that are believed to be indicators that one is possessed by marine spirits include the following:

  • Dreaming about having sex with strangers when asleep
  • Challenges in getting a marriage partner after waiting for a long time
  • Dreaming about swimming in oceans, lakes, and rivers
  • Dreaming about playing with frogs and snakes
  • Having a desire to break relationships
  • Having a desire to divorce your spouse over silly issues

Wrap Up

The topic of marine spirits is a touchy one.

Those who believe in them claim that these beings are a force of nature. They affect human life in many ways.

They seek to cause harm and pain and pretty much destroy the plan of God for humanity.

Then there are those that don’t care for the spirits at all.

No matter where you stand, it is clear that marine spirits are a big part of some people’s lives.
