9 Celebrities Who Have Battled Kyphosis: A Must-Read List

Kyphosis, also known as a hunchback, is quite common among older people, whose spinal bones weaken as they grow older. It can also affect teenagers resulting in malformation of their spinal bones or the bones wedging with time.

Most of the adults who have this condition were first diagnosed with Scheuermann’s disease which causes Scheuermann’s kyphosis which can be impossible to reverse with exercises.

However, many people (including, artists, actors, and authors) have managed to lead successful lives and careers while coping with this condition.

So if you’re battling with a hunchback, know that you’re not alone. Here is a list of celebrities who have battled with the condition or who are suspected to be battling with the condition.  

Celebrities Who Have Been Diagnosed With Kyphosis

1. Milan Lucic

Lucic is a popular Canadian ice hockey player who plays in the NHL for the Boston Bruins. He has also played for the Vancouver Giant and is known for having a hunchback.

Milan was diagnosed with a condition known as Scheuermann’s disease which causes kyphosis.

This is the main reason he has a curved upper back with a hunch-over posture, which can be seen while he is playing or walking.

2. Hunter Pence

Another athlete with kyphosis or a hunchback is Pence. Pence may seem goofy while on the baseball field, but did you know that he also suffers from Scheuermann’s disease that developed while he was an adolescent?

The condition affected his spine leaving him without flexibility in the thoracic spine and a rounded upper back.

3. George Sampson

Sampson became famous after winning Britain’s Got Talent back in 2008 when he was 14 years old.

He is a popular singer, actor, TV presenter, and street dancer suffering from Scheuermann’s kyphosis.

He told The Sun that the condition has left him with a curved spine and a blind left eye. He has lost flexibility and dancing has become impossible for him as he keeps bumping into everything.

4. Nick Kyrgios

Kyrgios is always seen in a fixed kyphotic position with thoracic flexion, rounded shoulders, and forward head position.

And if he doesn’t fix his posture, he may lose mobility in those regions which can affect his game.

The tennis player has a mild hunchback and is believed to be having mild kyphosis which has affected his posture. 

5. Topper Headon

Headon is a popular English multi-instrumentalist and drummer who was diagnosed with hyperkyphosis.

Topper experienced some back pain which is common with an aging drummer, but he was later diagnosed with Kyphosis.

Luckily he underwent a treatment that improved his posture. He still works out daily and can be seen with a better posture and straighten his spinal bones while strengthening them.

6. Alexis Blendel

Alexis Blendel, popularly known for her role in Gilmore Girls as Rory Gilmore is believed to have kyphosis.

She has not talked about it, but she does have a hunchback that fans of the have noticed increasing in size over the years.

Her posture has also changed and she has complained of back pain, which suggests that she may have mild kyphosis.

7. Taylor Swift

Swift has always had a bad posture, but back in 2018 various photos of her with a hunchback surfaced leaving her fans believing that she has kyphosis.

Her spinal cord appears to be curved leaving her with a very bad posture. But she hasn’t confirmed or denied it.

8.  Vin Diesel

Like with Taylor Swift, Vin’s fans have noticed that he has a very bad posture and suspect that he may have a hunchback.

He has rounded shoulders with his head bent forward when he is walking, just like Tom Hardy.

9. Tom Hardy

Hardy also has a bad posture with rounded shoulders and has been suspected to have kyphosis. But he has not confirmed or denied the rumor; instead he has focused on his career and continues to give us some of the world’s top blockbusters.

Is There Treatment For Kyphosis?

Severe cases of kyphosis have resulted in pinching of the nerve roots or spinal cord. 

Luckily, this issue can be corrected using various surgeries with the most popular one being spinal fusion. 

This procedure involves a surgeon fastening the spinal bones using screws and metal rods. But if it is mild, you can do a number of workouts to improve your posture.
