Most of their employees agree that the work environment of all Cleanshelf stores is conducive and highly professional.

There are well-defined channels for employees to submit their grievances in case of issues.

It’s the reason why we have never heard of strikes or publicized complaints from their workforce.

Challenges

I. Weekend and Holiday Work

Although during the holidays, the stores are closed early (6 PM), if you want to apply for a job at any of their stores, you must be prepared to work during the weekends and holidays.

Cleanshelf Supermarket Controversies

The retail giant has had its fair share of controversies and legal tussles, as seen below.

1.   Tax Evasion Lawsuit

The retailer won a Ksh 5.9 million tax claim in August 2021 after the KRA failed to provide substantial evidence linking it to the missing trader tax evasion scheme.

KRA argued that the company benefited from creating false invoices to exaggerate their cost of sales.

However, the tribunal presiding the case stated that Cleanshelf Supermarket had submitted the required tax invoices and the delivery notes proving that they had legally purchased the supplies.

2.  Hand Sanitizers Controversy

During the onset period of the Corona pandemic, CAK (Competition Authority of Kenya ) directed Cleanshelf Stores to contact and reimburse all the customers that had purchased hand sanitizer at overpriced rates.

Before the pandemic, the retail stores used to sell a single 500ml Tropikal hand sanitizer at Ksh 200 but instantly hiked the prices to Ksh.800 after the announcement of COVID-19 in Kenya.

CAK accused Cleanshelf of exploiting its consumers by taking advantage of the products’ increased demand.
