List of Kikuyu Clans: Their Meaning and Attributes

Kikuyu tribe is currently the largest and most popular ethnic community in Kenya.

They are mostly found around the fertile highlands of Mount Kenya regions since their main economic activity is agricultural farming.

Kikuyu Clans

The Agikuyu tribe acknowledges their origin from its founding ancestral couple of Gikuyu and Mumbi.

According to the tribe’s traditional belief system, Gikuyu went to the foothills of Mount Kirinyaga (currently known as Mount Kenya) to pray.

He asked his creator, Mwene Nyaga, to bless him with children, and his prayers were answered since the couple later conceived nine daughters.

Each clan now traces its lineage to these female siblings: Wanjiru, Wambui, Waceera, Wanjiku, Nyambura, Wangeci, Wairimu, Wangari, and Wangui.

The Birth of Kikuyu Clans

When his daughters matured, Gikuyu returned to the holy mountain to pray.

God (Mwene Nyaga) instructed Gikuyu to sacrifice a young lamb by lighting a fire using nine sticks to symbolize each of his daughters.

It is believed that from the sacrifice emerged nine strong men.

Struck by Gikuyu’s daughters’ beauty, they all agreed to marry them.

Each family proceeded to build their homesteads after starting a family.

This move led to the birth of the nine clans of the Agikuyu community, known as the ‘House of Mumbi.’

The Meaning and Attributes of Each Clan

1.   The ‘Anjiru’ Clan

The first daughter was named, Wanjiru, because when she was born, Gikuyu’s herds of goats were black, and the child loved to play with them.

She also had a dark skin tone hence the name ‘Wanjiru’ since Kikuyu’s definition of black or dark tone is ‘Njiru.

This clan is recognized to be the first in line since they are the descendants of the firstborn daughter.

Therefore, they are said to have leadership qualities.

2.   The ‘Ambui’ Clan

The second child was the prettiest of all the daughters.

Her name ‘Wambui’ was derived from the Zebra, considered the most beautiful animal.

The Zebra was referred to as ‘Wambui Mishore,‘ meaning the stripped one, in reference to the animal’s black and white stripes.

Apart from being attributed as the clan with the most beautiful descendants, they are also considered doubtful and have a good memory.

3.    The ‘Aceera’ Clan

The third born was named Waceera/Njeri.

The name means a person who loves to move or travel a lot since the daughter loved traveling.

The clan is considered to be natural travelers and explorers.

4.   The ‘Anjiku’ Clan

The term hard work in Kikuyu means ‘Njiku.’

Gikuyu named her Wanjiku as she proved to be very hardworking.

The Anjiku clan is currently recognized as the most hardworking people in the Kikuyu tribe.

5.    The ‘Aithaga’ Clan

The fifth sibling was named Nyambura, the founder of this clan since she was born during the rainy season (the Kikuyu definition of rain is ‘Mbura’).

They are said to have special powers because their words can influence the ancestors, such as controlling the rainy seasons.

6.    The ‘Aitherandu’ Clan

Wangeci was the sixth child who later formed the Aitherandu clan.

Her name means one who can understand things fast (aitherandu) since she was very sharp as a child.

This clan is believed to be very organized in all their activities since they inherited their descendant’s sharpness.

7.     The ‘Airimu’ Clan

According to the Kikuyu dialect, giants are called ‘Irimu.

Since she was the tallest child in terms of her physical nature compared to her sisters, her parents named her Wairimu.

She is the original matriarch of the ‘Airimu’ clan.

They are frequently attributed to being the defenders of the entire ethnic tribe due to their strong physique.

8.   The ‘Angari’ Clan

Due to her fierceness and braveness since she was a child, the eighth child was named ‘Wangari’ in reference to the leopard called ‘Ngari‘ in Kikuyu.

The clan is considered the most courageous one in the Kikuyu tribe.

9.   The ‘Angui’ Clan

The act of being a lead singer in Kikuyu is called ‘Gu Kuya’ hence the name Wangui, given to Gikuyu’s last born since she loved to sing.

The clan is credited with producing some of the best singers in the entire Kikuyu tribe due to their descendant’s musical talents.

Most Popular Kikuyu Traditional Dances

Kikuyu is a Kenyan community occupying the areas around the slopes of Mount Kenya.

Like many other communities, the Kikuyu community held many traditional occasions like weddings, initiation, and childbirth.

They celebrated their occasions traditionally through singing and dancing.

There were many traditional dances for young people and some exclusively for the older folks.

The most popular traditional dances in Kikuyu included:

             Ngucu

•             Kibaata

•             Gichukia

•             Mugoiyo

•             Mwomboko

  • Ndumo

Newly wedded couples could also take part in the dance to enjoy their union traditionally.

You can find dancers enacting the Mwomboko dance in major national events in Kenya.

In this traditional dance, dancers pair into two, with every man holding a woman to dance together like a couple.

Mwomboko is one of the most popular dances in the region.

2. Ngucu

Ngucu is a Kikuyu traditional dance that was performed by women, men, and children.

10 Traditional Kenyan Dances That Showcase Kenya’s Rich Culture

Is ALX Software Engineering Legit?

ALX is a one-year-long software engineering course seeking to equip individuals with job-ready programming skills.

There is a rise in demand for software engineering services as the world continues to embrace technology.

Statistically, Africa has a shortage of software engineering talent, with only 690,000 out of 23 million worldwide, which is why Africa Leadership Group came up with the software engineering course.

The ALX course is critical for individuals looking to unlock their potential and gain unlimited access to global job opportunities.

ALX Software Engineering Program

As mentioned in the introduction, the software program takes 12 months to complete.

The program has four learning sprints divided into 12 weeks of modules.

Additionally, the course is entirely online, and those interested should have a laptop or computer plus a stable internet connection.

English proficiency is also an enrolment requirement. To the benefit of many, no programming experience is needed to apply.

The software engineering program is not for the faint-hearted and calls for interested individuals to develop the right attitude to experience a smooth ride.

The success of the course depends on the learner’s willingness to acquire technical skills because the mentors are ready to make the learning experience worthwhile.

On graduate expectations, every learner should meet an average score of 30% in each sprint project, 80% in the foundation stage, and be active on the intranet.

Applicants are also expected to dedicate at least 70 hours a week once the training kicks off.

Is ALX Legit?

Finding out the legitimacy of a course you would like to pursue is crucial because not all online programs meet the integrity threshold, and you would waste your money and time.

ALX  is a legit and trusted program that has helped many young people acquire tech skills remotely.

Not only studying, but ALX also invites learners to join The Room community after completing the course for a chance to network with other professionals, explore job opportunities, and receive career support.

The program enjoys global sponsorship from globally recognized tech brands like Amazon, Microsoft, Jumia, MTN, Google Safaricom, Flutterwave, and Africa Leadership University.

ALX Software Engineering Certificate

A software engineering certification is like a dream come true to many learners because it earns them recognition needed to work in almost any field requiring their services.

Graduates are awarded a globally recognized certificate upon completing ALX’s software engineering course.

Besides the certification, graduates enjoy other post-certification opportunities like joining The Room’s talent community and creating life-transforming professional relationships with like-minded talents.

ALX Software Engineering Salary

Software engineering is a lucrative career.

ALX’s partnership with The Room has enabled graduates to work for companies like Meta, Vodafone, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Standard Group, MTN, KPMG, Upstream, and L’oreal.

In Kenya, software engineers earn an average monthly salary of 100,000.

Depending on clientele location, some can make 350,000 or more per month because software engineering services can be offered remotely worldwide.

ALX Software Engineering Cost (is it free?)

Generally, graduating in software engineering comes at a cost unless sponsorship is involved.

In the ALX case, this year’s soft engineering fee has been waived courtesy of Mastercard Foundation and other partners, meaning that successful applicants will study for free.

ALX Application

Applying for the ALX software engineering course is an easy and swift process that takes less than 15 minutes.

ALX wishes to notify applicants that they do not request fees in the application process and that any charges from the ALX team or its affiliates should be reported to their customer support email address [email protected].

Applicants should be between 18 and 34 years old and fill in all required details for the application to go through.

This year’s application closes on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023.

Onboarding of successful applicants is scheduled to take place on Monday, 20th February 2023.

Interested candidates can apply here because the deadline is fast approaching.

ALX Software Engineering Scholarship

ALX software engineering course cohorts enjoy fully-funded scholarships from various sponsors.

That means all they need to invest in is time, an uninterrupted internet connection, and a laptop or desktop.

Mastercard Foundation is this year’s sponsor for the upcoming one-year course.

Other scholarships come from ALX’s partners like Udacity.

Mpesa Reversal Failed: What Happens and What to Do?

If you have ever sent a significant amount of money to the wrong number via Mpesa, you already know how helpless one can feel.

Before you call the stranger’s number or dial the reversal number, many questions crowd your mind.

What if they don’t pick up my call? What if they have already withdrawn the money? What if they have Fuliza that has swallowed my money?

Well, mistakes happen, and no matter how careful you are, you may still find yourself in such a situation.

If you are lucky, you can reverse money sent to the wrong number by sending the erroneous transaction to 456.

You are supposed to copy the erroneous transaction from M-Pesa messages and paste it into a new message, with 456 being g the recipient.

You are supposed to receive a notification alerting you that the reversal request is being processed for the next 120 minutes.

Alternatively, you can chat with Zuri via WhatsApp at 0722000100.

Choose Reversal from the service options Zuri offered, copy and paste the wrong transaction, finish by confirming your M-Pesa details, and wait for the reversal to take effect.

Mpesa Reversal Failed- What Does it Mean?

The dreaded M-Pesa reversal failed message is very disappointing.

It suggests that your efforts to reverse the money through Zuri, Safaricom App, or 456 have been futile because the recipient has already withdrawn it.

However, all is not lost, and you can explore other alternatives to get your money back, including taking legal action.

What Happens When Mpesa Reversal Fails and What to Do

Unfortunately, not all M-Pesa reversals are successfully processed.

Some Kenyans are dishonest and swift to withdraw money that doesn’t belong to them.

Some Kenyans make peace with the fact that they have lost the money for good, especially if the amount is insignificant.

Others prepare to use all means possible to get their money back.

If the reversal fails, do the following:

  • Reach out to Safaricom’s customer care. They will call the recipient and request them to return the money. There is no guarantee that this approach will be successful, but you should try it nonetheless.
  • Take legal action. It is a crime to hold someone’s money intentionally and refuse to return it. Failure to return money can land culprits in prison for two years, a Ksh200,000 fine, or both. Some do not take this law seriously, only to find themselves cooling their heels in a police station after being arrested for the crime.

What about Reversing Money Withdrawn From the Wrong Agent?

Away from sending money to the wrong number, some also withdraw money from the wrong agent.

This can happen after missing or entering an incorrect number.

In this scenario, Safaricom has used GPS technology or something close to that to ensure that only withdrawals from agents within 5 kilometers of proximity go through.

That way, it is rare to withdraw from the wrong agent. Should it happen, do the following to recover your money:

  • Select English or Kiswahili Language
  • A customer care representative will engage you. Explain your predicament and share the number of the Agent you wrongly sent the money to. You may be asked to share other details too.

You need patience because it may take 48 hours to get your money back.

How to Avoid Sending Money to the Wrong Number

Safaricom introduced the Hakikisha Service to help M-Pesa users confirm the details of money recipients before sending it and as that of an agent before withdrawing funds.

Pertinent and Contemporary Issues in CBC in Kenya

The controversial Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) was introduced in 2017 by the late Education cabinet secretary, Professor Gorge Magoha.

The new education system, meant to replace the 8-4-4 education system, places more emphasis on the complex results of the learning process (i.e., the information, skills, and attitudes that students will apply) than it does on the traditional topic matter that students are expected to study.

It entails a shift in emphasis from exam-focused instruction to each learner’s ongoing development—from lecturing pupils to hands-on learning; and from memorization of information to understanding and group learning.

One of the main features of the CBC is ‘the Pertinent and Contemporary Issues (PCIs).

What are the Pertinent and Contemporary Issues In CBC?

The Pertinent and Contemporary Issues are Issues that touch people in their daily lives, such as lifestyle diseases, HIV and AIDS etc.

PCIs were recognized as emerging issues and trends in the prior curriculum.

Pertinent and Contemporary Issues (PCIs), which have been recognized as important in both individual and societal lives, are included in the CBC designs.

The Pertinent and Contemporary Issues are created to ensure that education is relevant to societal and economic demands.

Since then, the original ‘’Pertinent and Contemporary Issues’’ areas have been decreased from six to four.

What Are The Four Pertinent And Contemporary Issues Areas?

The four Pertinent and Contemporary Issues areas include:

1. Global Citizenship

The issues covered here include integrity, peace and human rights

2. Health Promotion Issues

The issues covered here include HIV and AIDS, drug abuse and substance use, alcohol and substance use, lifestyle/communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, first aid, and harmful cultural practices.

3. Life Skills and Values

The issues covered here include self-awareness, self-esteem, coping with emotions, managing stress, assertiveness, negotiation, peer pressure resistance, problem-solving, and critical and creative thinking.

4. Social-Economic and Environments Issues

The issues covered here include gender issues, animal welfare, environment, disaster risk reduction, safety and security (such as road safety, fire safety, cyberbullying prevention, radicalization and violent extremism), and environmental conservation (such as disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, environment and technology, pollution).

What Are The Benefits Of The Pertinent And Contemporary Issues in CBC?

I. Students learn things that are relevant to their day-to-day lives

The Pertinent and contemporary issues in CBC seek to equip learners with the demands of the current education (aspects that are relevant to their current day-to-day lives).

The 8-4-4 education system was seen as falling short of Kenya’s vision 2030 requirements for education that aims to make the country a competitive and prosperous economy.

To achieve Vision 2030 goals, the country needs people with different competencies from technical and social perspectives.

II. Learners are equipped with the tools to develop into better, more dependable citizens in the future

During the Pertinent and Contemporary Issues in CBC classes, learners are taught to identify the issues and find solutions to them.

They also visit areas that are affected by those issues and talk to the people affected to know the root cause of the problems.

The 8-4-4 system paid too much attention to the individual without providing them with the tools to grow into better, more responsible citizens in the future.

As a result, Kenya developed widespread problems with negative ethnicity, corruption, violence, and a lack of patriotism.

People were taught to prioritize their own demands over the needs of society as a whole.

IV. Learners are required to apply the knowledge they’ve learned in school

The Pertinent and contemporary issues classes give learners the ability to put the knowledge, abilities, and values they’ve learned in class to use to solve life problems.

The previous education system focused on what learners know. In other words, students were focused on cramming to pass exams.

Dorcas Rigathi Family Background

Dorcas Rigathi was born in Murang’a in a humble family.

Her father died when she was 11 years old, forcing her mother and siblings to move to Thika’s Kiandutu slums after relatives refused to help them.

Her mother was hospitalized for six months after her father’s death, prompting Dorcas and her sisters to work as house helps and their brothers to work in coffee farms to feed themselves.

Their situation saw them live in a chicken house as their mother toiled hard to give them a decent life.

Dorcas lost not only her father but a sister to pneumonia too.

Dorcas Rigathi Education

Dorcas started her education journey late because of her family’s poverty.

Alongside her younger siblings, they had to wait for their older siblings to get their education because their mother couldn’t educate them all at once.

Her mother decided to venture into selling vegetables, maize, and beans to enroll Dorcas in school.

Dorcas started her education journey at Mugumoini Primary School at Kiandutu.

She later got admitted to Alliance High School for her secondary education.

However, she later switched to St. Francis Girls, where she completed her high school education.

Dorcas enrolled in a teaching course at Kenyatta University in 1985, majoring in History and CRE.

Dorcas Rigathi Career Background

Dorcas has garnered many career titles after finishing her undergraduate studies at Kenyatta University.

For reasons best known to her, Dorcas did not practice teaching despite studying for the same at the University.

Her career started at the Cooperative Bank of Kenya, where she worked as an Agriculture Department banker. That was in 1990.

Fifteen years later, Dorcas resigned from the banking job to run her family’s business and serve the church.

She started serving as an usher in 2002 at the Grace Ministries Church, her current church.

Dorcas began a widow’s ministry within her church called Dorcas Rigathi Mercy Ministries, having found inspiration from her mother’s widowed life.

She had watched her mother suffer when her uncles and other relatives could help them but only saw them as a burden.

The ministry’s sole purpose was to work closely with widows and help them in different capacities, which she still does.

The initiative has earned her recognition, especially the honorary doctorate from Breakthrough international Bible University in 2021.

Besides running her widows ministry, Dorcas also serves as the patron of the Association of Pentecostal and Evangelical Clergy of Kenya (APECK).

In her role in the family business, Pastor Dorcas serves as the Director of one of their companies, Wamunyoro Investments Limited.

She has been the primary shareholder in the family’s business because of her husband’s involvement in active politics, and now he is helping President Ruto run the country.

The icing on the cake in the career life of Dorcas was last year when Ruto’s presidency took over, and her husband’s deputy president role took effect.

As the second lady of Kenya, her close association with first lady Madam Rachel Ruto especially on spiritual matters, has earned her respect from many Kenyans.

Dorcas is using her second lady title to impact Kenyan lives.

Her first initiative is to partner with the Kenya Union of Savings and Cooperatives (KUSCCO) to financially empower boys and young men.

She has also partnered with the National Police Service to help and mentor struggling police officers as mental health cases continue to rise in the police force.

Dorcas and Rigathi Gachagua Relationship Timeline

The story of how Dorcas and Rigathi met is quite interesting.

Apparently, the two met on the day Dorcas had decided to put an end to her miserable life.

Gachagua, who was studying and a student leader at the University of Nairobi, was organizing a list of students that would attend an event graced by President Moi.

Dorcas was a student at Kenyatta University and decided to use that chance to commit suicide.

She planned to take the trip and cause a scene at the event by ranting at the president while approaching him, a daring move she thought would prompt Moi’s security to shoot her point bank for breaching security protocol.

She had intended to commit suicide because a gas cooker she had bought for her mother had exploded and burnt two neighbors’ kids, and she blamed herself for the unfortunate incident.

However, her plan didn’t succeed because Moi stood up and started walking toward her.

Gachagua, who was the head of the delegation, would intervene and offer her a shoulder to cry on after she narrated to him about her plans.

Dorcas was summoned by the president at the State House the following day for a candid conversation following the events of the day before.

She met Gachagua again at the State House, where his mother had accompanied him.

Gachagua would then introduce her to his mum.

The meeting was a turning point in her life because not only did she get a chance to air her frustrations to the president, but she also got a friend in Gachagua who would later become the love of her life.

Their relationship culminated in marriage after completing the university.

The two were from poor backgrounds, which strengthened their connection to the point of venturing into several businesses together.

Dorcas revealed in an interview with Rev. Cathy Kiuna that she fell in love with Gachagua because he was industrious and never shied from doing manual jobs.

He also supported her side hustles while she was working as a banker.

The two have supported each other in their marriage of 35 years.

They have two sons, Kevin, and Keith Gachagua. Rigathi shared that he wished they had more children because their house gets lonely since his sons are all grown up.

Dorcas has supported her husband numerous times, especially when scathing allegations of the illegal tender acquisition were brought against Rigathi.

During these trying moments, she was revealed as the director of most companies that had won questionable tenders.

Dorcas terms her husband as supportive and amplifies that marriage works.

Rigathi Gachagua Wife’s Net Worth

There is no doubt that Dorcas earns a decent living from her role as her family’s company’s director, second lady, pastor, and other behind-the-scenes ventures.

However, her net worth is unknown, but if we can go by her husband’s net worth, the couple has an estimated wealth of one million dollars.

The estimate comes after Rigathi Gachagua revealed in the deputy president’s debate last year that he is worth 800,000,000, which has increased with his current State salary.

Additionally, the deputy is set to recover his seized 200,000,000 from the Asset Recovery Agency after the amount was dismissed as proceeds of crime.

Dorcas Properties, Cars, and Houses

There is little information capturing Pastor Rigathi’s lifestyle.

It would have been easier to find this information if the couple’s social media accounts depicted their lifestyle.

However, the family has a lavish rural home in Sagana.

Currently, they reside at the sprawling deputy president’s official State home in Karen, which has housed former deputy presidents like Ruto and Kalonzo.
